Winemaking Intern - Woodbridge (R&D)

JOB SUMMARY

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for making high quality wine. This position works directly with the Winemaking Team and will be an integral winemaking support position, helping to facilitate daily harvest winemaking responsibilities. As our Winemaking Intern, you will monitor fermentations, generate data, and produce reports which will aid our team in making accurate and timely decisions. 

This is a temporary assignment, generally between July through November. Schedules are determined on an as needed basis to keep up with grape processing. This may include weekend work, and overtime

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct daily fermentation monitoring including tasting, evaluating analysis, and managing tank temperatures.
  • Visit vineyards and assist in evaluation of the fruit prior to harvesting.
  • Work with winemakers and cellar leads on pressing, grape receival, facilitating and prioritizing workload.
  • Prepare fermentation samples and perform analysis on Spectrophotometer, upload to Wine Xray.
  • Collect data from the winery press systems to generate white yield data.
  • Under direction of winemaker, generate work orders for grape and wine processing. 
  • Perform bench scale additive trials.
  • Taste and evaluate produced wines with Winemaking team after harvest.
  • Assist Winemakers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. 
  • Ability to work from June through the end of November.
  • Ability to work various shifts including weekends and overtime.
  • Recent graduate or pursuing a degree in Enology and/or Viticulture or related field.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills – oral and written. 
  • Experience in computer applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook). 
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Previous harvest experience in winery production.
  • Self-starter, willingness to take initiative.
  • Able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Agile mindset-harvest is fast paced and changes gears often.
  • Well-developed wine tasting skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Working conditions in certain areas of the winery are cold, warm, wet, slippery and noisy. Involves exposure to loud noises, fumes, toxic chemicals, near moving mechanical parts and lift truck traffic.
  • Frequent walking, standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouch or crawl, going up and down stairs and ladders.
  • Must be able to move up to 55 lbs.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Occasional travel with ability to work weekends and overtime.

COMPENSATION

  • Hourly Pay Range Posted: $19.00 – 29.50/hr.
  • Actual compensation will be based on factors such as experience; skills, knowledge, and abilities; education; and other position related factors.
