Engineering Technician 2 (Finance)



Overview

We are seeking a full-time Engineering Technician 2 in our Cary, NC location. In this role, you will be responsible for building, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modifying developmental and production equipment and systems while interpreting standards and procedures providing clear testing documentation.

Essential Functions

  • Perform simple troubleshooting with minimal input from engineering
  • Operate more advanced lab test equipment and tools to test and troubleshoot test failures
  • Troubleshoot more advanced test failures and isolate between test setup and equipment failures
  • Set-up, run, and complete detailed qualification test plans and provide detailed test reports independently
  • Set up and execute test plans as documented and provide detailed/error free test reports
  • Check and/or test functionality of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions
  • Write technical reports, including documentation of the test setup and block diagrams, to fully document test results and analysis
  • Work with various computer systems and programs to perform various clerical functions, including entering bills of materials, and completing purchase orders
  • Recommend design improvements and changes in assembly methods to improve reliability or simplify assembly and maintenance and learn more advanced hardware modifications
  • Track lab equipment and coordinate with the Calibration Lab to ensure equipment calibration compliance
  • General lab Maintenance and planning
  • Reference and interpret design standards and procedures
  • Clearly document basic test setups, testing performed, and testing results in an organized manner
  • Complete tasks with a balanced approach to quality and quantity
  • Work collaboratively and professionally in a team environment with other Garmin associates to achieve goals including sharing ideas and information freely and positively
  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities and develop solutions in a timely manner
  • Identify and resolve problems of basic scope using proper engineering tools and techniques

OTHER ATTRIBUTES PER AREA OF SPECIALIZATION:

  • Partner with Design Engineers through reading schematics, understanding and debugging basic circuits to the component level
  • Understand/apply system interconnects and wiring practices and can diagnose and correct connection and wiring problems and/or create system wiring diagrams with assistance
  • Perform component level debugging with minimal oversight
  • Able to operate more advanced lab test equipment such as PCB milling machines, multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzer, and logic analyzers
  • Perform Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and unit modifications including adjusting, calibrating, aligning, and/or modifying circuitry and components and record effects on unit performance and learn skills for handling more difficult hardware modifications
  • Prepare and execute electrical rework and software updates on lab prototypes
  • Recommend design improvements and changes in basic circuitry
  • Independently prepare units and conduct environmental and performance tests such as shock, temperature, and waterproofness
  • Build moderately complex prototypes and test fixtures for mechanical assemblies
  • Troubleshoot moderately complex mechanical systems
  • Maintain, stock, and clean equipment and tools for the department and lab as assigned, and perform or coordinate moderately complex troubleshooting and repair activities as needed
  • Able to perform moderately complex CAD support tasks
  • Design and construct basic test fixtures
Basic Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Electronics Technology, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a substantially similar field OR electronics related Military training OR completion of a minimum of 80 hours towards a BS degree in Electronics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or substantially related field OR current ISCET certification or related certification AND a minimum of 1 year relevant experience in addition to any one of the above education options OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with ability to effectively apply learned knowledge
  • For internal associates, demonstrated mastery of the responsibilities of the Engineering Technician 1 role
  • Demonstrated ability to apply test processes and methods to verify design and products performance
  • Demonstrated ability to read schematics, understand and perform component level debugging with minimal oversight (Electrical role only)
  • Must demonstrate the ability to safely and competently operate basic and advanced lab equipment and tools including PCB milling machines, oscilloscopes, EMC analyzers, etc. (Electrical role only)
  • Understands basic test plans and procedures including FCC, CE, and live GPS testing
  • Demonstrated ability to reference and interpret design standards and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to perform simple troubleshooting with minimal input
  • Demonstrated ability to execute product test plans as documented
  • Proficiency working with MS Office Suite, specifically Word & Excel
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Must possess the ability to: bend, twist and lift up to 50 lbs. and team lift up to 100 lbs. while using safe lifting techniques; push/pull test equipment on wheeled, moveable racks of up to 400 lbs.; stand for extended periods of time, climb and utilize ladders to connect cables; and walk long distances throughout the facility
Desired Qualifications
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 as a general rule)
  • Mechanical prototyping skills
  • Test software development experience
  • Experience with mechanical measurements and inspection tools
