Research Assistant II - Internal Medicine, Medical Genetics (Finance)

We are hiring for a highly motivated Research Assistant II to join the UTHealth Houston McGovern Medical School Department of Internal Medicine, Medical Genetics in Houston, Texas. In this role you will support ongoing research projects focused on stem cell biology and molecular genetics. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction and quantitative PCR (qPCR). This role involves conducting experiments related to stem cell maintenance and differentiation, nucleic acid extraction, antibody staining, and flow cytometry. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and a solid foundation in molecular and cellular biology are essential.

Position Summary:

Under general direction of senior research staff, conducts activities to support research projects. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Report to Dr. Siddharth Prakash and Dr. Callie Kwartler in the Division of Medical Genetics. Dr. Prakash will be responsible for the overall direction of this project as well as the experimental approach. Dr. Kwartler and her research team will supervise research training for this project.

2. Conduct experiments primarily related to stem cell culture, nucleic acid extraction, antibody staining, and flow cytometry.

3. Restock lab supplies and monitor reagent quality, in coordination with other researchers.

4. Maintain accurate and timely records to document experiments and research protocols.

5. Help to maintain cell cultures when other researchers are not available.

6. Participate in required group meetings, workshops, and seminars.

7. Comply with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes about laboratory safety and research training.

Certification/Skills:

  • General knowledge and some detailed concepts of research field assigned.
  • Experience with cell culture and molecular techniques (DNA extraction, qPCR) is required.

Minimum Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:
  • One year of related experience in a research or clinical lab environment.
  • May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
