Fire Apparatus Technician II - Throughout Riverside County (Finance)



The County of Riverside Fire Department is seeking to fill multiple Fire Apparatus Technician II positions to support their Perris and Indio Stations. Under direction, performs major and minor mechanical and electrical repairs and adjustments on heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered fire apparatus and related equipment under field conditions; serves as a mentor for Fire Apparatus Technician I‘s and other shop personnel in the County Fire Department Fleet Bureau; performs other related duties as required.

The most competitive candidates will possess experience performing Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) for specialized vehicles such as bottom dumps, end dumps and water trucks .

The Fire Apparatus Technician II is the journey level classification in the Fire Apparatus Technician series and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents are assigned to maintain, diagnose malfunctions and make necessary repairs on fire apparatus and related equipment in the field, often under adverse conditions. While on field assignment, incumbents must determine whether the equipment can be repaired in the field or must be sent to the garage for repairs. Incumbents undergo the process of meeting the educational and certification requirements set forth in the California State Fire Training Procedures Manual for Emergency Vehicle Technician II, while they have already met educational and certification requirements of Emergency Vehicle Technician I at the time of appointment or promotion. Incumbents are required to fulfill and maintain the educational and certification requirements of California Emergency Vehicle Technician II within two years of appointment or promotion to Fire Apparatus Technician II.

The Fire Apparatus Technician II is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Technician III in that the latter exercises a high degree of independent judgement, provides project oversight to subordinate staff and performs the most complex assignments that require extensive knowledge and proficiency.

Who May Apply

Current employees of the County of Riverside and/or the Riverside County Fire Department may be considered before other applicants, depending on the volume of applications received.• Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical failures and defects in fire apparatus and other equipment in field conditions; diagnose, repair and overhaul fire suppression and related equipment.

• Mentor and train Fire Apparatus Technician I's in the repair and overhaul of a variety of diesel and heavy-duty gasoline engines, transmissions, clutches, rear ends, differentials, brake systems, carburetors, fire suppression equipment, and related components.

• Perform maintenance, welding, alteration, and/or repair of automotive equipment as needed.

• Perform complete routine maintenance including oil changes and lubrication services; perform complete California Highway Patrol (CHP) 90-day compliance inspections and fire pump tests. Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience as a Fire Apparatus Technician I with the Riverside County Fire Department or an equivalent class in another jurisdiction.

Knowledge of: Principles of gasoline and diesel engines; fire apparatus maintenance and repair; methods, tools, equipment, and parts used in the repair and maintenance of this equipment; operation and application of mechanical diagnostic equipment.

Ability to: Mentor others; issue, follow and understand verbal and written communications; read and understand shop manuals and mechanical diagrams; diagnose and repair mechanical defects in a variety of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel Fire Department equipment in both field and shop; operate equipment used in repairing and servicing this equipment; prepare and maintain records and reports.

Other Requirements
License/Certificate: Possession of a valid Class A or B California Driver's License.

Within two years of appointment or promotion, incumbents are required to have successfully completed and continue maintaining the educational and certification requirements outlined in the most current Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) II Section of the California State Fire Training Procedures Manual and the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification examinations.

It is the responsibility of the incumbent to periodically check the NIASE and State Fire Training Office for updates to the level I and II certification requirements and comply with required training/ certifications.

For those positions designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a (DOT) mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required. Applicants must submit a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) driving record prior to hire.

Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.
