Job Description:

• \tAssist with routine surgical procedures as assigned by the Supervisor and/or attending veterinarian.
• \tMay monitor anesthesia and vitals during procedures.
• \tSet up surgery for assigned studies. Includes preparing surgical packs, instruments, and gowns. Prepare ancillary documents and all necessary supplies for termination of assigned studies.
• \tPrepare all testing, test articles and animals according to written instructions and protocols.
• \tMaintain ancillary records (logbooks, worksheets).
• \tConduct routine studies under supervision according to written instructions and protocols.
• \tMay participate in the development and improvement of documents, test systems, quality systems, and workflow.
• \tMay stock supplies for testing.
• \tMay perform environmental monitoring.
• \tMay prepare and maintain reagents required for testing.
• \tMay review reagent preparation worksheets, raw data, and documentation as applicable per primary department.
• \tAdminister the test article or extract at appropriate dose.
• \tConduct daily health observations.
• \tProvide suitable care for the welfare of the animals according to written instructions and protocols.

Qualifications & Technical Competencies:

• Bachelor's degree in scientific discipline or Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology required.
• CVT, RVT, or LVT preferred.
• ALAT or LAT preferred.
• Awareness of applicable guidelines and regulations appropriate for primary department, these may include USDA, USP, Tripartite, FHSA, CTFA, FSA, ICH, EP, and/or JP.
• Knowledge of research animal physiology, pharmacology, and general animal care.
• Ability to work in GMP/GLP environment.

Working Conditions:

• Physical activities include standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reaching with hands and arms. Occasionally required to climb or balance.
• Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Physical requirements include frequently lifting up to 25 pounds (12 kgs) or more on occasion.
• Associate must be able to talk and hear.
• May be required to be on-call for continual equipment monitoring. The associate will respond in accordance with criteria outlined in standard operating procedures.
• While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is regularly exposed to, and must handle and come in contact with, a variety of small laboratory animals, and is regularly required to use small, hand-held surgical tools to perform small, sometimes meticulous, incisions, stitching and other precise movements. The Associate is frequently exposed to sharps, wet conditions (nonweather), gasses such as cO2 and isoflurane, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The Associate is occasionally required to work in a Bio-Safety-Level 2 (BSL2) environment and may, on rare occasions, be exposed to zoonotic diseases.
