Laborer - Underground Fiber (Construction)

Summary

The Underground Fiber laborer is responsible for the installation support on various size and scope utility construction project sites. This role requires proven experience in a utility construction environment and the technical knowledge, skills, and experience to safely operate equipment that could include Mini Excavators, Drill, Hydro and/or Bucket Truck. Must be customer and quality centric, have a complete buy-in to safety, with a strong work ethic, and ALL IN attitude to achieve results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety First – Put safety first and production second. Always.
  • Performs general manual strenuous labor within all weather conditions that includes but is not limited to hand digging, installing utilities, moving material, inspecting ground conditions, ensuring traffic control, etc.
  • Entry-level ability of the 811 locate process and how to problem solve for existing utilities and make decisions based on findings in adherence to CMS's policies and procedures.
  • Entry-level knowledge of daily redline and production reports.
  • Independently operate one or more types of heavy equipment (directional drill, mini excavator, hydro truck, bucket truck) with limited guidance from an experienced operator.
  • Assist with the overall job, including groundwork, all tasks required to complete site per customer specs, maintaining a safe work environment, daily use and completion of JSA forms, assisting with overall crew work, maintenance of vehicles and equipment, etc.
  • Assist in the coordination, preparation, and cleaning of job sites.
  • Participate in continuous training offered by CMS, including weekly safety calls.
  • Must continue to work towards training and certifications for work-related jobs.
  • Ensure the highest level of safety and quality control requirements are upheld.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

  • This job operates in a field environment. Must be in good physical condition with the ability to routinely bend, squat, climb, kneel, push, pull, lift 50lbs or more, lift in awkward positions, stand, and twist for extended periods.
  • Must be willing to travel out of market/state for up to several months at a time (90%).
  • May be required to work long and unpredictable hours.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes DOT physical, background check, and drug/alcohol testing and participate in the random testing program.
  • Must be willing to work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive company vehicles. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications

Technical Skills:

  • Must be able to work in a team environment and be a valued member of the crew and the company.
  • Must be able to read and understand construction drawings.
  • Must remain aware of surroundings at all times, including pedestrian traffic, vehicles, and other potential hazards."
  • Must be able to operate different types of equipment such directional drill, mini excavator, hydro truck, bucket truck, etc.
  • Successful completion of industrial first aid and rescue training.

Soft Skills:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and by email with team members and clients. 
  • Must be able to read, comprehend and carry out instructions.
  • Must be able to work on a team and independently as required.

Supervisory Requirements

  • None.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time position.
  • Workdays and hours are typically Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with some overtime requirements.

Travel 

  • Weekly travel is required for this position.  Usually between 80 to 100% of the time.

Education and Experience 

Required:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED).

Desired:

  • Related trade school education.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working on an underground fiber construction crew.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a construction crew to complete projects.
