ESG Specialist (Lakewood, CO or Houston, TX) (Finance)



Position Description

The ESG Specialist will join a team responsible for publishing Kinder Morgan's annual Sustainability Report. The team collects and verifies the accuracy of and completeness of data from several groups and departments within the company. The team writes the report itself and circulates the report for review with subject matter experts and management. Finally, the team responds to ESG rating and ranking companies. Knowledge of sustainability standards and drawing upon technical skills to improve the efficiency of data collection and validation are keys to success.
This position can be located in Houston, Texas or Lakewood, Colorado. This position has the opportunity to work a hybrid work schedule with Monday through Wednesday in the office and Thursday and Friday at home.

  • Gather necessary information to produce Sustainability report
  • Create Sustainability reporting policies, processes, and controls
  • Collaborate with internal Subject Matter Experts, Technical Work Groups, and other departments (e.g. Investor Relations, Human Resources, Procurement and Administration, EHS, Operations, Legal, Accounting, and Corporate Communications) to:
    • collect, calculate, and compile various reporting Sustainability metrics
    • verify the accuracy of the data collected, identify and resolve data discrepancies, and provide suggestions to Management for improving data quality
    • gather sustainability related initiatives, projects, programs, and data
    • review Sustainability report discussion, analysis and metrics
    • lead updates to current policies, processes, and systems
    • create new policies, processes, and systems as needed
    • Conduct variance analysis to identify changes period over period, identify issues with data, and explain findings to Management
  • Present Sustainability data to Management concisely and accurately, showing trends and outliers and identifying areas where Sustainability performance could improve
  • Recommend updates to IT systems and improve data collection, verification, and reporting through the use of technology
  • Interface with internal and external auditors during assurance and assurance-readiness, participate in effort to address identified deficiencies or recommendations
  • Stay up to date on changes to ESG regulations, standards, and guidelines (e.g.CA GHG Disclosure Rules, GHG Protocol, SBTi, ISSB, TCFD, TNFD, GRI, UN SDGs, and CDP)
  • Conduct benchmarking against peer Sustainability reports and related disclosure
  • Respond to and evaluate ESG Rating agencies scores, reports, and controversies
  • Develop case studies and examples to demonstrate how the company puts actions towards our policies
  • Update internal company intranet and/or kindermorgan.com with applicable Sustainability information
Position may be filled at various levels depending on experience and job skills of the successful candidate
Position Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school
Job Requirements
  • High level of expertise using Microsoft Excel and other Office applications including Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Teams
  • Excited about being part of a Sustainability reporting team and implementing Sustainability reporting systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to analyze data, find potential errors and trends, and present findings to Management
  • Excellent presentation skills to different audiences, including Senior Management
  • Ability to collaborate with departments across the organization to meet standards and deadlines
  • Well-developed organizational skills including the ability to manage several projects at once
  • Self-starter who can identify improvements to processes and systems
  • Proficiency with technology and the ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Exhibit high regard for ethics and personal safety, safety of employees and the general public, and safety of company assets
  • Must be able to work with a team, take direction from supervisor, adhere to work schedules, focus on details, and follow work rules
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Travel is required and is anticipated to be 10% annually
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers

Preferred Experience, Skills, and Knowledge
  • Prior experience writing, reviewing, and analyzing ESG, Sustainability, or Impact reports
  • Possess a working knowledge of the oil & gas midstream sector and the sector's sustainability challenges and opportunities
  • Experience reporting under the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) standards, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) S1 and S2 standards, Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), CDP standards, or Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards
  • Experience with generative AI tools, including large language models (LLMs) and related applications
  • Experience with process or system implementations
  • Experience with Workiva and Sphera software
  • Experience building Power BI or other business intelligence reports
  • Knowledge of Kinder Morgan business unit operations
  • Possess a working knowledge of environmental and safety regulations for oil & gas pipeline, processing, and storage operations
Pay range: $64,300 - $148,000 per year. This position includes a discretionary annual incentive plan. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.
